Azimio La Umoja – One Kenya Alliance, in a statement, confirmed the resumption of anti-government demonstrations starting Tuesday, May 2, 2023.
The alliance executive chair and former Kakamega Governor, Wycliffe Oparanya, in a statement said the resumption of the demos was pushed by Kenya Kwanza’s failure to commit to demands to be met in their quest to find solutions, namely, the high cost of living.
Oparanya, in his statement, noted that the government had instead resorted to “propaganda that the costs have decreased when the facts across Kenya indicate otherwise.”
Azimio leadership noted the inclusion of Eldas MP, Adan Keynan who was elected on a Jubilee ticket under the Azimio umbrella, which did not go down well with the leadership. Keynan was chosen by Kenya Kwanza to represent them as part of its delegation in the bipartisan talks.
“It is therefore a mockery of the envisaged dialogue to have him at the negotiation table for Kenya Kwanza.” Read part of the statement.
“Kenya Kwanza has also shown no commitment to lowering the cost of basic goods including unga, fuel, electricity, and school fees,” the statement said in part.
According to Oparanya, Azimio remained committed to an extra-parliamentary dialogue which was “honest, transparent, meaningful, and bipartisan in conception and execution.”
The protests would be limited to Nairobi, according to Oparanya.
The protests were suspended on April 2, after President Ruto and Raila Odinga agreed to the bipartisan approach to address their differences.
