Mukumu Girls High School in Kakamega County reopened this week after 5-week closure following a wave of sickness claiming the lives of 3 students and a teacher.
The school was closed indefinitely on April 3, 2023 after the call was made by the Ministry of Education, together with the County Government of Kakamega, paving way for investigations and implementations of health measures.
The investigations revealed students had consumed food with human waste.
In the lead up to the reopening, the school had to comply with the strict health measures set by the Ministry of Health which included setting up of hand washing stations at strategic points, prioritizing hygiene.
The school also made changes to its administration, replacing the then Principal, Ms. Ndolo, with Sister Jane Mmbone and the immediate disbandment of the board of management.
Parents and students welcomed the news of the school’s reopening with relief that their education would not be interrupted.
The administration assured guardians, parents, and stakeholders that they had taken the necessary measures and precautions ensuring safety and well-being of their students.
