President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday June 21, 2022 signed into law the Traffic Amendment Bill in a move to streamline traffic laws and introduce hefty penalties for lawbreakers. Here is what the laws entail.
All vehicles that have operated for a period exceeding 4 years from the recorded date of manufacture shall be subjected to inspection at intervals to be determined by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). The inspection shall be conducted by the Authority (NTSA) or persons authorized in writing by the Authority.
Any person who, when driving or attempting to drive, or in charge of a motor vehicle on a road or other public place, is under the influence of an alcoholic drink or a drug beyond the prescribed limits, shall be guilty of an offence and, liable to a fine not exceeding one hundred thousand shillings or to imprisonment not exceeding two years or both.
As for the Public Service Vehicles, PSVs, the operators are supposed to be in uniform at all times. Maroon uniform for conductors and navy blue for drivers and should display their badges without fail. They are also subject to mandatory training every two years for competence purposes.
This is a good motive. Lots of cars out here are unroadworthy. It would be best if NTSA would disqualify them from being on the road.
